Two black spider under a stone
« am: 2021-07-23 18:54:12 »
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Date of discovery: July 20, 11 am.
Habitat: 850 m - under a stone, along a stairway of a slope. Around meadows with shaved and dry vegetation, bushes and shrubs (semi-arid to arid habitat).
Size: 7 mm.

Ciao,
I found this female Zelotinae under a stone in its sack.
Under the same stone there was also a sub-adult male.
Is it an adult female?
As for identification, I hope at least in the genus.
Thank you.

Well, they look a lot like Zelotes. While the colors are similar in some Drassyllus spp., this genus should (according to the wiki) have enlarged posterior median eyes, which I can't find in your pictures. On the other hand the epigyne looks rather unike the ones of Zelotes sp. I know (and very poorly sclerotised), so I would assume the female is subadult too.

The same pictures, but taken in Germany - I'd say: Zelotes, probably subterraneus-group? But since they are taken in Italy - I'm not sure about other similar genera there, sry.

Sinca you find interesting spiders every once in a while you could consider collecting them. For some days they are pretty easy to keep...

Clemens

Ciao Clemens,
thanks for your intervention.
Unfortunately we are still at the starting point: which genus?
And yes, the female seems immature to me too, but I'm not familiar with the genitals.
We await some more comments.

I'm not a collector, Clem, and I don't see the point of keeping in the house the spiders I find only for a few days.

Hello,
I archive them as suggested by Clemens, namely Zelotes sp.?
Or is better Gnaphosidae-Zelotinae?
