Titel: Which Metellina? => Metellina cf. segmentata
Beitrag von: Raffaele Falato am 2020-11-17 17:23:57
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Date of discovery: November 14, morning.
Habitat: 700 m - in an oak forest, on medium-high vegetation.
Size: 7mm measured.

Good evening,
is it possible to identify this female Metellina on the basis of these ventral photos?
I have seen the photos on the wiki, but I cannot get a precise idea.
Thanks.
Raf

Unnecessary photos removed ...

It seems to be Metellina segmentata; see section "Habituell" @https://wiki.arages.de/index.php?title=Metellina_segmentata (https://wiki.arages.de/index.php?title=Metellina_segmentata)

Hi Martin,
thanks for your guess.

Unnecessary photos removed ...

You're right, but I was undecided which photo of the epigyne was the best and, if in doubt, I posted all three.
But, in the end, it is not a drama, you have been concerned with eliminating the superfluous.

Yes, I've looked at the photo and read the review dozens of times, but I can't see the detail.  :( :-[

Well, I'm going to go hide behind the slate in shame and then go to the ophthalmologist to check my eyesight.

Thanks Martin.  :D

Greetings from Southern Italy.

I do not like this trait, especially because of the second text section in the screenshot and given the general variability of the black pigment in the two Metellina. As one can see, Raffaele' s specimen lacks dark pigmentation altogether! I should check my darker segmentata females for this though. Otherwise, I also tend towards segmentata mostly because of time of year (even if I have found maature mengei males in autumn), rest of colour scheme, epigyne silhouette (even if latter is a bit hard to discern, I think that the larger epigynal plate depressions in mengei would look differently on the photos.

Hi Simeon,
about the epigyne, have you seen the photos deleted by Martin?
There was one where it was seen more clearly, the photo was less blurry.
Otherwise, if I am allowed, I can repost the photo.

I saw them, yes, but only briefly. I would like to see this photo indeed.

cf segmentata should be ok. Like Simeon said, this trait is probably not 100% reliable, and in museum specimens often only hard to detect.
