Haplodrassus invalidus?

Hi Arno,

I suppose you already took a look on my site...
Note the identification is still in discussion because there are 2 similar species, H. invalidus and H. macellinus.
I think your spiders are correctly identified but I though contacted one of my French colleagues who knows very well those species.
As soon as I get his opinion, I let you know ;)

Thanks Pierre,

Do you have any data about H. macellinus? This species is known from Portugal, H. invalodus not.

Hi Arno,
The two species are compared by Simon, but without much detail. From his description, and the figures in Kovblyuk et al., I agree your specimens are likely to be H. invalidus, but Pierre's seems closer to H. macellinus, which apparently is characterized by a broader and widened (sécuriforme = "beilförmige") apophysis.
But the female makes me hesitate. The only figures of the H. invalidus epigyne I could find are those in the description of its synonym H. vignai, and they don't quite seem to match.
Best wishes,
Rainer

There is also a good description (with good drawings of male and female genitals) in this article :
Levy, G. (2004). Spiders of the genera Drassodes and Haplodrassus (Araneae, Gnaphosidae) from Israel. Israel Journal of Zoology, 50, 1–37. Retrieved from http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1560/RUQP-20ML-VDBA-3GKX

We also are in discussion about those species in a French forum and the best should be, of course, to have both species under the bino, so we could compare...
In France, H. invalidus is known to be from Corsica while H. macellinus is known to be from the continental part but we are thinking both species have perhaps been misidentified and both species should also be found in France itself...

Another thing : Levy 2004 mentions the synonymy between invalidus and vignai.
When we compare the different drawings made by the authors, we consider that it's wrong and that H. vignai is in fact a synonymy of H. macellinus...
Not so evident !  ;)

Hi Pierre,
Do you have a copy of the Levy article that you could share? My library doesn't have access.
Best wishes,
Rainer
