Grayish Philodromus <=
« am: 2020-05-11 23:05:37 »
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, southern Italy.

Discovery date: April 19th, around 3:30 pm.
Habitat: 800 m - on the balcony of my house.
Dimensions: 3 mm measured.

Hi everyone.
Here is yet another young specimen of Philodromus found this spring on the home balcony.
However, this spider has a different color from the others, it is grayish.
Can you help me identify it?
Thanks.
Raf

Hi Simeon,
I have a doubt about the genus: I noticed only now that the spider has two dark lateral spots on the opistosome. Do you see them too?
Twin genus or just an impression?

I did notice them yes, but wondered. I cannot exclude a young longipalpis even if the spots might point towards pulchellus group (Pulchellodromus is not a "good" genus, it is a group within broad Philodromus unrightfully elevated to genus rank)

Yes, we already talked about Pulchellodromus no long ago, Simeon.
In any case, good or not good genus, Pulchellodromus is covered by the wiki of this forum, as well as - for example, to stay in my part - in the updated "Checklist of Italian spiders" by Pantini & Isaia.
When will taxonomists make peace with each other?
Here I see more resemblance to glaucinus, but you are the boss.  ;)

Good morning.
Sorry guys, how do I classify it?
There are too many alternatives (unidentified Philodromidae, Philodromus cf. longipalpis, Philodromus sp., Philodromus sp. pulchellus group, Pulchellodromus sp.).
Thanks.

So, I checked our local Philodromus longipalpis and saw similar spots in them. Preferably as Philodromus sp or something

Well, for prudence I file the spider like Philodromus sp.
But if any of you think we can go as far as cf. longipalpis, I will be even happier.
Thanks Simeon.
Greetings from southern Italy.

While I favour aureolus group (and longipalpis specifically), I cannot be 100% sure
