A question on Cyclosa conica/sierrae
« am: 2020-07-03 18:44:25 »
Hello everybody.
I have a question to ask.
On araneae.ch I read:
Cyclosa conica "opisthosoma colored very variably, dorsally dark red-brown to black";
Cyclosa sierrae "opisthosoma yellowish with black median marking".
This description means that conica has the color red and sierrae instead no?
And, consequently, if I meet a Cyclosa also colored red it is conica, while if I meet a Cyclosa without red coloring it can be both conica and sierrae?
Is it possible?
Thank you for the time you will all dedicate to me.
Raf

Don't trust any non-genital description of the species. C. sierrae is also not easily to distinguish based on the genitals, and the best way is to look at males. In Addition, the size of the opisthosoma tubercle is not reliable as well.

I think the genus needs a proper revision.
