Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Date of discovery: August 26, morning.
Habitat: 800 m - in the village, along a staircase among the vegetation typical of public gardens.
Dimensions: about 3 mm.

Ciao,
can you help me identify this specimen (male or female) of Salticidae?
Thanks.
Raf

Hi Raf,

it resembles spiders of the genus Pseudoeuophrys.

Ciao Jutta,
you're right.
It should be one between lanigera and vafra, I think.
Let's wait, I can't tell them apart.

Greetings.

Hi Raf,

I think the description on araneae shows two differences of P. lanigera and P. vafra, that apply to your specimen. First the size, females of P. lanigera reach a length of 3.5 to 6mm, whereas those of P. vafra reach 4.5 to 4.75mm. Secondly P.lanigera show a distinctive bright middle line along the opisthosoma, which is also featured by your specimen. Generally P. vafra is described with dark brown and black features, that do not occur on your female spider.

Just some thoughts I had,

Greetings

Jutta
