Leviellus thorelli?
« am: 2020-11-21 13:38:42 »
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Date of discovery: November 19, morning.
Habitat: 700 m - in an oak forest, in the jamb of a wooden door of an abandoned bungalow.
Size: 5-6mm.

Hi,
I believe this spider is a young female of Leviellus thorelli.
What do you think?
Thanks.

A juvenile Leviellus is correct but why not kochi?

Hi Simeon,
good question.

Granted that I didn't find any description of kochi (except the genitals), I based on the description of thorelli in the wiki and comparing the photos of the two species on Pierre's website:
1. the legs of my spider have well marked dark rings, like thorelli and not like kochi (see photos on Pierre's website),
2. the whole ventral section of my spider corresponds with thorelli and not with kochi, as I note on the photos of the wiki, of araneae.ch and of Pierre,
3. the longitudinal yellow stripe of the sternum of my spider is identical to that of thorelli, while that of kochi is branched and in any case different (Pierre's site),
4. finally, near the place, I found in recent days this 10mm adult female that corresponds in everything (pattern, ventral section, sternum, legs) to my spider and  to Leviellus thorelli. Perhaps the shape of the epigyne can help in identification.
